Lake Michigamme is an inland lake positioned on the upper peninsula of Michigan, bordering Lake Superior. The closest major city is Milwaukee, Wisconsin, around 242 miles away. This is also the location of the nearest commercial airport.

The nearest hospital and urgent care is in the township of Ishpeming and is about 25 minutes away.

Explore Michigamme

Although the area is remote, the small township of Michigamme has plenty of local cuisines to choose from. Mount Shasta Restaurant and B Dogs BBQ are both right on the water at the lake. If you’re looking for a fun night out, Snowshoe Inn is a quaint local pub that’s sure to please.

Van Riper State Park is just 8 minutes down the road from the lake (depending on what area you are in). It has beautiful views, beaches, trails, a playground, and camping areas that can be used year-round.

Mount Arvon is an hour away, but the views are worth the drive! This mountain is Michigan’s highest peak at 1,979.238 feet above sea level. In addition to the views, you may come across some wildlife as well. A beaver pond at the top of the climb is a favorite place to spot moose.

Less than a half-hour away, the township of Ishpeming has several unique activities. For a winter activity, Sleighman is a great place to go for a horseback ride through the snow! Canyon Falls Trail and Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum are in the same area. Yoopers Innovation Museum is a fun and family-friendly place that holds the world’s largest rifle and the chainsaw and an added bonus — it’s free!

On the Water

Considered a large lake by the locals, 4,300-acre Lake Michigamme has a nice variety of fish including smallmouth bass, walleye, musky, trout, crappie, perch, sunfish, and northern pike. There is a boat launching and dock nearby that residents can use.

For the outdoor enthusiast, Lake Michigamme is full of small islands and inlets to explore and camp out at.
